What Size Crane Do I Need?
A crane's rating is its capacity at the shortest reach. The farther the load is from the crane, the less it can lift. That's why the right crane depends on reach as much as weight.
Information the crane company needs
- The weight of the heaviest piece
- Where the crane can set up and how far the load is from there
- How high the load needs to go
- What's in the way: buildings, trees, power lines
- Ground conditions: paved, grass, sand or mud
Rough guide
- Boom trucks handle many lighter lifts such as rooftop units and residential trusses
- Mid-size truck and rough-terrain cranes cover most commercial building work
- Large all-terrain cranes handle heavy steel, precast and long reaches
- The crane company does the final lift plan and sizing
General information only. Every lift should be planned by the crane company and a qualified person on site.
